Which direction should a tennis court face?
An outdoor tennis court should be oriented with its long axis running north-south. Players face along the length of the court, so a north-south layout keeps the rising and setting sun out of both players’ sightlines through the morning and evening hours when most play happens. Tennis has an extra reason to take the rule seriously. The serve begins with a ball toss several feet above the server’s head, which means a server on an east-west court is not just tracking a low sun near the horizon; at certain hours they are tossing the ball directly into it. Orientation is the one glare control that is decided on paper, costs nothing at design time, and cannot be corrected after the pad is poured.

Why north-south, and why tennis feels it more than most sports
Glare disables a net sport when the sun is low, roughly the first and last two to three hours of daylight, and when it sits inside the cone of vision of a player looking down the court. Run the court east-west and the low sun sits in one player’s face every morning and the other’s every evening, concentrated in exactly the before-work and after-work windows recreational and league play occupies. Run it north-south and the low sun sits off to the side of both sightlines.
Three tennis-specific factors sharpen the rule.
The service toss. A server looks up, not just ahead. High sun angles that barely trouble a groundstroke can still sit behind a tossed ball. This is why even midday play on a badly rotated court produces complaints on the serve first.
Sightline length. A tennis court is 78 feet between baselines, and the full pad with runbacks is roughly 120 feet long. Players read the ball across a longer horizontal distance than in pickleball, so low-angle glare has more time in the visual field per point.
Lobs and overheads. Defensive lobs push the receiving player’s eyes well above the horizon. Courts with an east-west bias produce sun-lost overheads at hours when a north-south court plays normally.
Two refinements are worth carrying into a site plan. First, orient to true north, not magnetic north; declination varies by region and a compass layout can miss by 10 degrees or more. Second, a deliberate rotation is sometimes better than exact north-south. Some designers rotate the long axis modestly, commonly in the range of 10 to 20 degrees, to bias protection toward the hours a specific facility actually programs. A club with heavy evening league play may rotate toward the setting sun’s arc for its latitude. The further a rotation drifts toward east-west, the more playing hours it costs, so this is a refinement, not permission to ignore the rule.
When sites cannot give you north-south
Orientation competes with parcel geometry, setbacks, easements, existing grades, and the layout efficiency of multi-court batteries, and it loses more often than designers admit. On constrained sites the practical question is which deviation costs least.
The workable hierarchy runs: full north-south; a rotation up to roughly 20 degrees; a rotation approaching 45 degrees with mitigation; and finally east-west with the honest acceptance that low-sun hours on open courts will be compromised. Mitigation is real but partial.
