What is a padel court base?

A padel court base is the structural foundation built under the playing surface and, on a padel court specifically, under the steel-and-glass enclosure that defines the sport. It does two jobs at once: it carries and drains the playing area the way any court slab does, and it provides the anchored, dimensionally accurate platform that the perimeter structure and glass panels bolt to. Because a padel court is an enclosed structure rather than an open surface, base work and structural work are inseparable here in a way they are not on a tennis or pickleball court.

Below are the base types used on padel courts, how drainage and anchoring are handled, and why the base decision is really a structural decision.

The layers and elements under a padel court

Subgrade. The native soil is graded and compacted to a uniform, stable plane. Uniform compaction matters more than any single number, because differential settlement is what cracks slabs and, on a padel court, what pulls a glass-panel structure out of true. Poorly draining or expansive soils are excavated and replaced or stabilized before the slab is poured.

Structural slab. Permanent padel courts are almost always built on a reinforced concrete slab. The slab has to hold flatness tolerance across the full 20m by 10m playing area and carry the point loads from the enclosure posts. This is the layer that determines both how the surface plays and whether the structure stays square over years of use.

Anchor and edge details. The posts that hold the glass walls and mesh are anchored into the slab, so anchor-bolt layout, embed locations, and turn-down edge detail are designed into the base rather than added afterward. A base poured without the enclosure layout in hand is the most common and most expensive padel base mistake.

Concrete base options for padel

Reinforced concrete. The standard permanent padel base. Steel reinforcement gives the slab the stiffness to resist cracking under play loads and the point loads of the enclosure, and it holds the flatness the surface system needs. It costs more upfront than lighter alternatives and needs cure time before surfacing, but it moves the least over time.

Post-tensioned concrete. Used on demanding soils or in freeze-thaw climates where crack resistance is the priority. The tendons keep the slab in compression, which strongly resists the cracking that can affect conventional slabs. It is the most crack-resistant option and the one to consider when soil or climate is working against you.

Porous or drained slab systems. Some padel installations use a porous concrete or an engineered drainage layer so water passes through the surface and the slab rather than sheeting to perimeter drains. Whether this suits a project depends on climate, water table, and the surface system chosen.

Drainage on a padel court

Padel is played on an artificial turf surface with sand infill, and water has to leave the court without ponding on the turf or pooling under the slab. Drainage is designed at the base stage in one of two ways: a planned slope that moves water to perimeter or center channels, or a porous system that lets water pass vertically through surface and slab. Either way, subsurface drainage and perimeter grading are engineered in before the pour, not retrofitted later.

Why the base decision drives the whole court

On a padel court the base carries the enclosure, so the slab decision is upstream of the padel court surfaces you choose, the padel court dimensions that the anchor layout has to match, and the enclosure and lighting elements scoped as part of overall padel court construction.
