A breakdown of all three PICKLETILE™ products and the specific problem each one solves on a multifamily court project.
AUSTIN, Texas – June 4, 2026 – The most common source of scope confusion on multifamily court projects is not budget. It is a misunderstanding of what each product in PICKLETILE’s system actually does, and more importantly, what each one does not do.
Developers who walk into the scoping process with a clear understanding of the product roles make better decisions, move faster through design, and avoid the expensive mistake of specifying the wrong system for the wrong application. This article covers the three products that come up most often in developer conversations: the full-height PICKLEGLASS™ enclosure, the 4-foot glass panel system, and AUTONOMOUS access control.
PICKLEGLASS: the full-height perimeter enclosure
PICKLEGLASS™ is the foundational product in the PICKLETILE™ system and the one that defines what a modern multifamily court facility looks like at a premium price point. It is a full-height structural glass enclosure that wraps the perimeter of the court, engineered on a powder-coated steel frame with architectural-grade finishes and tempered glass panels rated for coastal and hurricane environments.
The default specification is a 10-foot height, which provides ideal ball retention, visibility, structural performance, and noise reduction. Heights of 6, 8, 13, and custom sizes are available depending on the site environment and acoustic requirements.
What PICKLEGLASS™ does: It contains play, creates a defined and architecturally finished court environment, and delivers the acoustic performance that allows courts to sit within a multifamily community without generating noise conflicts with adjacent units. The system has an STC rating of 36 and provides up to 50% sound reduction in independent testing. That acoustic performance comes entirely from the full-height perimeter enclosure. This is the product that makes a court compatible with residential proximity.
What PICKLEGLASS™ does not do: It is not a planning or access management tool. It defines the physical infrastructure of the facility. Scheduling, access, and usage management are handled by a separate layer in the system.
PICKLEGLASS™ is the right specification for any multifamily court where the developer needs acoustic performance, architectural finish quality, or both. In practice, that is almost every project where courts are positioned as a premium amenity within 50 to 150 feet of occupied units.
The 4-foot glass panel system: visual separation and ball containment between courts
When a multifamily project includes two or more courts in the same facility, the question of what goes between the courts comes up quickly. The answer is a 4-foot glass panel system, which provides visual separation between sport zones and ball containment to keep play organized between adjacent courts.
This is a meaningful product in multi-court layouts. Without interior separation, balls cross between courts constantly, games interrupt each other, and the facility loses the defined structure that makes it functional as a managed amenity. The 4-foot system solves that problem cleanly, using the same steel frame and glass panel standards as the perimeter PICKLEGLASS™ enclosure.
What the 4-foot system does not do: It has minimal acoustic properties. The interior divider panels are not a noise mitigation tool. They are not rated for sound attenuation. They are not a substitute for, or a supplement to, the acoustic performance of the perimeter enclosure. A developer who is evaluating their noise mitigation spec and considering interior panels as part of that calculation is working with incorrect assumptions.
All acoustic performance in a PICKLETILE™ court facility comes from the full-height perimeter enclosure. The interior divider panels serve a completely separate function and should be specified on that basis.
This is one of the most important distinctions in the PICKLETILE™ product line, and it is the one most commonly misunderstood in early scoping conversations.
AUTONOMOUS: integrated access control
AUTONOMOUS is the access control layer of the PICKLETILE™ system. Built around the SmartLock platform and integrated with PodPlay, it allows a multifamily property to manage court access automatically, without staff involvement at the facility.
In practice, this means residents can book courts through the property management platform, receive access credentials, and enter the facility during their reserved time without a key or a staff member managing the gate. The system supports PIN code, key card, and scheduled lock configurations. It integrates with the property’s existing court reservation workflow rather than requiring a separate system.
What this does for the Principal/Owner: it turns a passive amenity into a managed facility. A court without access control is available to anyone at any time, which creates two problems. First, it cannot generate a usage record that demonstrates ROI to capital partners or asset managers. Second, it creates liability exposure around unsupervised access and after-hours use that is difficult to manage operationally.
AUTONOMOUS eliminates both problems. Access is logged. Scheduling is automated. Usage data is trackable. The facility functions as a premium managed amenity rather than an open recreational space.
What this does for the Director of Construction: AUTONOMOUS is installed as an integrated component of the court infrastructure during the original build. It is not an aftermarket add-on. The access hardware, conduit routing, and junction box placement are all specified in the original engineering drawings. Adding it at the time of construction is a modest incremental cost. Retrofitting access control to a completed facility is a significantly more expensive and disruptive project.
How the three products work together
Most premium multifamily court projects involve all three. The PICKLEGLASS™ perimeter enclosure defines the physical facility and delivers acoustic performance. The 4-foot interior panels organize multi-court layouts. AUTONOMOUS provides access management and usage tracking.
Each product has a distinct function. None substitutes for another. The scope decision is about which combination the project requires, and that decision is best made during the design phase with a clear understanding of the project’s site constraints, unit proximity, and amenity programming goals.
The right way to work through that decision is a 20-minute scoping conversation before your amenity design is finalized. We will walk through your site plan, identify which products your project actually needs, and give you a quote on the right scope. Request a quote to get started.
If you want to understand what the right product mix looks like for your specific project, that’s exactly what the scoping conversation covers. Request a quote and we’ll set it up.
